In The Remnant #0 (formerly The tribulation Taskforce #1), many people were puzzled as to why The Pope would be in league with Apollyon, the soon to be anti-christ. Many readers immediately took this as being anti-Catholic. The truth is, this concept of the Pope breaking bad is actually rooted in CATHOLIC writings!
The 878-year-old prophecy penned by the Jesuit Priest St. Malachy proclaimed that there would be 112 popes, and the final pope would be Petrus Romanus, which means Peter the Roman. This final Pope is said to be the Pope who defects from the faith. The original writing says, βIn the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End.β
So with this information, we decided to make the Pope in our story the prophesied Final Pope. Hope this enlightens and clears up that mystery! If you would like to know more on the subject, check out the podcast I did with expert, Chris Putnam. You can listen HERE.
